This is the perfect tour to learn more about the Jewish Roots in Lisbon, Portugal and also the Discoveries Period, the Golden Age of Portugal, who had once one of the biggest and longest world empires ever. Learn from our experienced local guide, the glory from the discoveries period, the navigators, and the kings and queens, back a thousand years ago to our days. You will get an experienced local driver-guide with your tour, providing you transportation and guiding around the major sights of Lisbon. The morning period will be focused in downtown and the Jewish sights of the city (Old Jewish Quarter, Jewish Memorial, etc) learning what happened after the big earthquake that destroyed all Lisbon downtown back in 1755, while the afternoon will be reserved to the discoveries period, allowing time to see the area of Belem, famous for the Belem Tower, Discoveries Monument and Jeronimo’s Monastery.
Intinery
The Lisbon City Jewish Half-Day Private Tour, will provide you an overview of the old Jewish Lisbon History, along with an historical visit to Lisbon downtown and the massive earthquake that destroyed Lisbon in 1755.
Although the itinerary can be adjusted during the day, to make shorter or longer stops, this is the standard itinerary:
- Start the private tour at 9AM or 2PM from Lisbon Downtown (Rossio Square).
- Pass by Restauradores Square, famous for the independence from the Spanish rule in 1640.
- Stop at one of the major squares of the city, Rossio, famous for the old Palacio Estaus and the Portuguese Inquisition Palace (Today, National Theathre D. Maria II), destroyed by the Earthquake.
- Arrive at the Jewish Memorial, remembering those who lost their lifes on the Lisbon Pogrom of 1506, the big Jewish Massacre of Lisbon.
- Learn from our experienced guide the history behind the establishment of the Jewish communities in Portugal, the escape from Spain and arrival of thousand of Jewish people in Portugal during the 14th and 15th hundreds, and the settlement of the Portuguese Inquisition during the 16th Century.
- Visit the Sao Domingos Church close to the Jewish Memorial.
- Pass by Praça da Figueira, the place of the old Lisbon Market with amazing views over the Sao Jorge Castle of Lisbon.
- Visit to Alfama and the old Lisbon Cathedral, Lisbon oldest church founded in 1150
- Arrive at the Alfama Jewish Quarter (Rua da Judiaria), and check the impact of the big earthquake on this part of the city
- End of the tour around 12PM (noon) for morning tours and 5PM for afternoon tours.
During the day we will pass by different attractions and stop for pictures. Major visits inside attractions are not included on this tour, instead we will make shorter visits inside to maximize your time and see the most sights possible.
